Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive method of obtaining pictures and other information about your developing baby. Ultrasound allows us to obtain more accurate dating for the pregnancy, information about possible birth defects, growth measurements and general information about the health and well being of your developing baby. Ultrasound is also an excellent way of monitoring problems such as ovarian cysts, and guiding procedures such as an amniocentesis.
Ultrasounds are done based on the medical needs of each patient. Generally, we perform 2 to 3 ultrasounds during the pregnancy. If indicated, many more ultrasounds are performed for monitoring purposes if there is any potential suspected or realized problem with the development or well-being of your developing baby. Our first goal is the health of your baby and we use ultrasound as an important tool for monitoring problems when needed.
The first ultrasound is done as soon as possible in the pregnancy. The second is generally done for an anatomical scan around the 17th to 18th week of gestation – this is the ultrasound that will tell you if you are having a girl or a boy… or maybe one of each! A third ultrasound may be done at about the 35th week, depending on your specific circumstance. Other ultrasounds may be done at any time during the pregnancy when indicated.
